Arthur Joshua Gang, 81, retired associate general counsel for litigation of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, died of complications related to pneumonia March 22, 1998at the Hospice of Washington.
Mr. Gang retired from HUD in 1980, then became general counsel to the Service Corps of Retired Executives and then counsel to the organization’s president. He served in those positions until 1993.
Mr. Gang, a resident of Chevy Chase, was born in New York and graduated from the City College of New York. He received a law degree at Columbia Law School and began his federal career with the Office of Price Administration in New York in 1941.
During World War II, he served in the Army in the Philippines and later in Japan. After his discharge from active duty, he was a colonel in the Army Reserve.
He moved to Washington in 1946 and worked for the Justice Department, then in 1959 transferred to the National Housing Agency and the Housing and Home Finance Agency, which later became part of the newly organized HUD.
His avocations included collecting studio glass.
Mr. Gang was a past president of Congregation Beth-El of Montgomery County.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Florence R. Gang of Chevy Chase; three children, Eleanor Aviva Hord of Baltimore, Jonathan Samuel Gang of Bethesda and Sharon Kim Gang of Seattle; and four grandchildren.

Interment Arlington National Cemetery Tuesday, March 24, 1998 at 11 a.m. followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. at Congregation Beth El of Montgomery County, 8215 Old Georgetown Rd., Bethesda, MD 20814. Shiva will be observed at the residence Tuesday through Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Beth El of Montgomery County; or to the Hospice of Washington, 3720 Upton St., NW, Washington, DC 20016.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
