Colonel Arvid G. Grundset of Vienna, Virginia, died on Thursday, May 21, 2009 after a long illness.
Born on April 17, 1929 in Bemidji, Minnesota, he was a childhood resident of Wisconsin and the suburbs of Chicago.
He joined the U. S. Army at age 16, served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and was stationed in Germany and Iran as well as various posts in the Washington area before his retirement in 1973.
He was a resident of Vienna, Virginia, since 1960 and a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park.
Colonel Grundset is the loving husband of Evelyn Hamner Grundset; father of Eric G. Grundset, Lee Ann (Tony) Christ and Mark A. Grundset; grandfather of Leah and Lara Grundset, Katelyn and Ashley Christ and the late Brian Christ. He is also survived by his sisters, Florence Loomis and Esther Kerr; brother, Harald Grundset; numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, August 17, 2009 at 3 P.M. Those wishing to attend should assemble at the administration building by 2:30 P.M.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
