Ann Callahan Kem, 67, an Army Major General’s wife who accompanied her husband to posts in Europe, the Far East and throughout the United States, died of lung cancer June 1, 2003, at her home in Arlington, Virginia.
Mrs. Kem was born in Waukegan, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Michigan. She had lived in the Washington area periodically since 1972. In the mid-1980s, she participated in several activities at Fort Belvoir. Since 1991, she had lived in Arlington. She was a member of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in McLean.
Survivors include her husband, retired Major General Richard S. Kem of Arlington; three children, Michelle Kem of McLean, Army Lieutenant Colonel John S. Kem of Annandale and Steven E. Kem of Ronan, Mont.; two sisters; and three grandchildren.

Beloved wife of 43 years of Major General Richard S. “Sam” Kem, USA, (Ret.); loving mother of Michelle Kem of McLean, Virginia, Lieutenant Colonel John S. Kem and his wife, Martha of Annandale, Virginia and Steven E. Kem of Ronan, Montana; grandmother of Katherine M., Robert J. and James C. Kem. Also surviving are her sisters, Sheila Swalgren of Lexington, South Carolina and Lucia Bierle of Waukegan, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, 1830 Kirby Rd., McLean, Virginia, on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery to be held at a later date. Contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 346 Maple Ave., East, Box 699, Vienna, Virginia 22180 or Hospice of Northern Virginia, 9300 Lee Hwy., 5th Floor, Fairfax, Virginia 22031.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
