John Francis Schut – Private, United States Army

John Francis Schut born January 15 1922 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and died December 22 1944 in Germany. John’s parents parents were Frank and Sena Schut.

John was a member of the Reformed Church of Sanborn, Iowa.  His mother died when he was 16 months old and he spent some time with relatives in Iowa until his father remarried.  He then spent some time at Benton Harbor, Michigan.  When his stepmother died, he again lived for some time with relatives in Iowa and with his brother, Sidney.  After that he worked on a farm near Sanborn, Iowa.

On March 21 1944, John entered the Army.  He arrived in France on September 21 1944 and was wounded October 14 1944. Following a period of recuperation, he entered combat again on November 18 1944 and was killed in action December 22 1944 while serving with the First United States Army in Germany.  He was originally interred in Belgium with full military honors. His Purple Heart and Presidential Certificate were presented to his father.

On April 22 1948 at 2:00 PM,  John Francis Schut was re-buried in Arlington National Cemetery.  His grave is #1271, Section 12. In attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schut, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Schut and their son, Frank D Schut. The family very much appreciated the attendance of Major Gerritt Wesselink of Washington, DC.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
