MASSAPEQUA, Long Island, July 1, 1947 – Commodore Adolf von S. Pickhardt, USN, retired, died yesterday in his home here after a long illness. His age was 55.
Born in New York, he was graduated from the United States Naval Academy n 1913. He commanded various destroyers in European and American waters during the First World War. Later he was executive officer of the New Mexico, navigator of the Maryland, and saw several years’ duty in Asiatic waters and commanded the Detroit.
Commodore Pickhardt was United States Naval Attaché for Air at our embassy in Berlin from 1940 until Germany declared war on this country in 1941. He was exchanged and came home in 1942. Heater he was on duty with the Bureau of Naval Operations in Washington and finally in Northwest Africa. He retired last year.
He leaves a widow, Mrs. Leola Pickhardt; a brother, Dr. P. C. Pickhardt of New York and three sisters, Mrs. Jere Colman of Boston, Mrs. G. P. Kuller of the Netherlands and Mrs. Pickhardt Kahle of Shelter Island, New York.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
