Brigadier General Ransom Edward Barber, United States Army (retired) passed away on October 24, 2009.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 15, 1930. During his youth he lived both at home and abroad, returning to Cincinnati in 1943 while his father, a United States Army Brigadier General, served in the Pacific Theatre, commanding the 59th Brigade.
Ransom E. Barber graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1947 and entered the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Upon graduating from West Point in 1951, he was commissioned as an Army Second Lieutenant.
As he progressed through his career, his assignments included service with the 7th Infantry Regiment in the Korean War and as a Company Commander in Japan.
In 1955, General Barber attended the Johns Hopkins University where he received a Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering. General Barber was then posted to West Point where he served as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. His next assignment was as an Assistant Military Attache to the Soviet Union. During his tour in Moscow, he traveled extensively throughout the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. He was later assigned to command the 525th Military Intelligence Brigade in Vietnam and Chief of Staff of the United States Army Military Personnel Center.
Upon his promotion to Brigadier General, he was assigned to the Army General Staff as Director of Tactical and Strategic Intelligence and then to the United States Army Forces Command as Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence.
During his Military career, he was awarded the Combat Infantrymans Badge, three Legions of Merit, three Bronze Star Medals, the Meritorious Service Metal, four Air Medals, the Army Commendation Medal and numerous foreign decorations.
General Barber retired from the Army after 25 years of service and embarked on a second career as a Senior Engineer with TRW, Inc. where he continued for the next 16 years in project management.
The Barbers have lived in the Sleepy Hollow Woods section of Annandale, Virginia, for 43 years and General Barber was involved in youth activities as diving coach at the Sleepy Hollow Bath and Racquet Club.
He married Claudette De Chaine Barber on graduation day in 1951 and they have four children, Brooke (Lowndes) Wilson, Saranne Segal/Piero Olzer, Alison (Ed Groesser) Barber, and Jeffrey (Teresa) Barber. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Luca, Sarah, Gabriel, Beau and Callie Piero.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel with interment to follow at the Arlington National Cemetery with full military Honors.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
