Richard E. Gerlach, Commander. United States Navy saw service in World War II.
He joined the Navy in 1940 as a Seaman and received commission as LDO in June of 1952 and retired in 1970 having served 30 years in regular Navy, retiring as a full Commander in the Navy.
As a seaman he served aboard the USS Idaho, The USS Augusta, and The USS Leyte (1940-1952). He also had tours of shore duty which included assignments in Portugal (1950-1952), Turkey (1957-1959), and Korea (1965-1968), and the Pentagon (1952-1957, 1959-1965, and 1968-1970).
Richard E. Gerlach was born June 24, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah and grew up in Knob Lick, Missouri. He was married for 56 years to Hazel Herbst Gerlach (July 6, 1921-October 5, 2007) and has 2 children: Gerald G. Gerlach and Sandra R. Gerlach Wilkinson, and has 6 grandchildren.
He retired to Arlington, Virginia, where he worked for Jobs for Veterans and was active in his church and a local troupe of Boy Scouts of America.
Services were held in Arlington National Cemetery in late March 2001 with full military honors.
My mom will be buried with my Father at Arlington National Cemetery on November 1, 2007.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
