Retired Navy Lieutenant Commander B.J. Littlefield, 66, of Yulee, Florida, died March 15, 2001, at Vencor Hospital in Green Cove Springs after a long illness.
A native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, he had lived in Nassau County since 1984.
Commander Littlefield was a graduate of Southern Illinois University and served 20 years in the Navy. He was involved in the quarantine of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis and worked in support of the Poseidon and Polaris missile programs.
After the Navy, he worked as a senior resident representative for the Vitro Corp. in St. Marys, Georgia, and retired last year after 26 years of service.
He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the Naval Supply Corps Organization, and was past president of the Quarterback Club of Fernandina Beach High School.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Hiroko Littlefield; a son, James Littlefield, Jacksonville; a daughter, Diane Hackbarth, Ames, Iowa; a brother, John Palmer Littlefield, Cross Anchor, S.C.; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
A military service was Tuesday at the chapel at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base near St. Marys. Honorary pallbearers were David Caples, Frank Hickman, Joel Stookstill, Grady Mauldin, Chuck Dahlgren, Jim Crisher, S.S. Lee and H.J. Savage.
Burial will be April 2, 2001, at Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
