Joseph O. Phillips of Port St. Lucie, Florida, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at Martin Memorial Medical Center, Stuart, Florida.
A native of Washington, D.C., he began his career as a carpenter/cabinet maker working with his father. Before his retirement in 1986, he was the owner/operator of Phillips Fabricators in Rockville, Maryland. He and his wife have lived in Port St. Lucie for 12 years.
During World War II, he served as an Anti-Tank Gun Crewman and Tank Commander in the Campaigns from North Africa through Italy and France. He was the recipient of three Purple Hearts. At the time of his death, he maintained memberships in the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Irma E. Mueller Phillips; a sister, Mary Mudd of Colonial Beach, Virginia; three daughters and two sons, Rose Marie Allen and husband, Larry of Denver, Colorado, Linda Jordan and husband, Jack of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Charles Phillips and wife, Carol of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, Steven Phillips and fiance, Kathy Kiley of Port St. Lucie, Deborah Pulzone and husband, David of Oxford, Maryland; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Maryland with internment in Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the charity of your choice.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
