Specialist Finch was assigned to Advisory Team 31 in Phu Loi. He had been in country a only couple of weeks when his road convoy was ambushed.
The ARVNs and the advisors left the vehicles and set up a defensive position. With the position about to be overrun, Specialist Finch left his position to return to the jeep and destroy the radio and logs. He was fatally wounded by automatic weapons fire.
Specialist Finch was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat “V” for his actions in the engagement.
