Joseph Walker Lloyd, 66, a retired Army colonel who also worked for defense contracting agencies in the Washington area, died of multiple myeloma June 23, 1999 at Prince William County Hospital.
Colonel Lloyd served 30 years in the Army before retiring in 1985. This included duty in Hawaii, Vietnam, Okinawa and Germany and service in ordnance units and as a specialist in data modeling and logistics. He settled in the Washington area in 1975. His decorations included a Legion of
Merit with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
A resident of Gainesville, he was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Michigan and received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Hawaii.
After his military retirement, he did defense contracting work with C.A.C.I., Anchor Software, M.T.A. and AMERIND.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Connie Stiller Lloyd of Gainesville; three daughters, Kelley Bergeson of St. Paul, Minn., Frances Avgerinos of Itasca, Ill., and Juliet King of New Market, Md.; and five grandchildren.

Also survived by five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 1, at 9 a.m. at Fort Myer Chapel. Interment Arlington National Cemetery. Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
