Frank C. Armstrong was born on 2 February 1859 and served in the United States Army as a Surgeon in both the Indian Wars and the Philippines Insurrection. He died in the Philippines on 4 December 1899 while serving with the 32nd United States Volunteer Infantry. He was returned to the United States and buried with full military honors in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
