Charles George Sadler – Major, United States Army

From a contemporary press report:

Charles George Sadler, 83, a former Silver Spring resident and retired Army Major who was a Veterans Administration personnel officer from 1961 to 1976, died February 12, 2000 at a hospital in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He had cancer.

Major Sadler, a Port St. Lucie resident who lived in the Washington area from 1945 to 1979, was a native of Dayton, Ohio. He enlisted in the Army before World War II and was taken prisoner in the Philippines in the early days of the conflict. He was released from Japanese captivity at war’s end.

He received the Bronze Star, was commissioned and became a personnel officer. When he retired from active duty in 1961, he was stationed at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.

Major Sadler had been a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He had been a Shriner and a Mason.

His wife, the former Theresa Gloria Chaconas, died in 1987.

Survivors include his companion, Ellen Teper of Port St. Lucie; four children, Charles Jr., of Washington, Leo, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Virginia Chatila of Beirut and Theresa Sadler of Kalaheo, Hawaii; an adopted daughter, Beverly Purl of Palm Bay, Fla.; a stepson, Earl Froman of Lusby; a sister; two half-sisters; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.


SADLER, CHARLES GEORGE (Age 83)

Of Port St. Lucie, FL, CHARLES GEORGE SADLER, on Saturday, February 12, 2000, at St. Lucie Medical Center. A native of Grand Rapids, MI, he had been a resident of Port St. Lucie for 21 years, moving from Silver Spring, MD. In 1961, Mr. Sadler retired as a Major from the U.S. Army after 25 years of service. From October 1943 to February 1945, Mr. Sadler was a prisoner of war in Billbid Prison in the Philippines. He ended his federal career with the Veteran’s Administration,
where he was personnel manager in the central office in Washington, DC. Mr. Sadler received a master’s degree in 1977 from Frostburg State University in Frostburg, MD, graduating with his daughter, Theresa, who obtained her BA. He was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Pierce. He was also a Shriner, and a member of the Port St. Lucie Power Squadron and the Florida Chapter of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor. Survivors include his companion, Ellen Teper of Port St. Lucie; three sons, Earl and wife, June Framan, of Lusby, MD, Charles Sadler of Washington, DC, and Leo Sadler of West Palm Beach, FL; three daughters, Beverly and husband, Ralph Purl of Palm Bay, FL, Virginia and husband, Adnan Chatila, of Beirut, Lebanon, and Theresa Sadler of Kalaheo, HI; three sisters, Mary Ellingson of Plymouth, WI, Nylene Mayer of Grafton, WI, and Betty Wayak of Mequon, WI; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa Sadler in 1987. A prayer service was held on February 16 in Port St. Lucie. Friends may call at JOSEPH GAWLER’S SONS, 5130 Wisconsin Ave. at Harrison St., NW, on Tuesday, February 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 36th St. and Massachusetts Ave., NW, on Wednesday, February 23, at 1:30 p.m. Interment to follow at Arlington National Cemetery.
