Headed Philippine Constabulary 30 Years

DALLAS, Texas, April 17, 1943 – Brigadier General Clarence H. Bowers, 63, head of the Philippine Constabulary for thirty years before the establishment of the Philippine Government headed by Manual Quezon, died today in the Veterans Hospital.
He served in the United States Army in the Spanish-American War and in World War I. He received the Distinguished Service Medal for action in the Philippine campaign.
His daughter, Mrs. Maud Bowers Rice of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, came to Dallas a few weeks ago when he became ill.
The general’s wife and another daughter were in Manila when that city fell and have not yet been heard from, Mrs. Rice said. Other survivors include Arthur B. Bowers of Cleveland and Harvey A. Bowers of Saginaw, Michigan, bothers.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at Fort Myer, Virginia, with burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
