Kenneth L. Artiss, 88, a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel who was a research psychiatrist and instructor at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, died October 23, 2001, of complications from colon cancer at his home in Rockville, Maryland.
He served for 21 years in the Army Medical Corps before retiring in 1964 as chief of the department of psychiatry in the division of neuropsychiatry at Walter Reed’s Institute of Research. His work there included development of treatment methods
for combatants with severe psychiatric disorders.
After he retired from the Army, Dr. Artiss was a senior consultant to Walter Reed’s psychiatric residency training program and director of research at Chestnut Lodge, a psychiatric hospital in Rockville. He also taught at the Washington School of
Psychiatry and was in private practice.
Dr. Artiss was born in Winnipeg, Canada. He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of Southern California medical school. He did his internship at Los Angeles County Hospital and psychiatry residency at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco.
His military honors included the Legion of Merit.
He was a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
His marriage to Elouise Artiss ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Carola Artiss of Rockville; a son from his first marriage, Frederick Leslie Artiss of Pusan, South Korea; and a granddaughter.

On Tuesday, October 23, 2001, of Rockville, MD, beloved husband of Carola Artiss for 48 years; father of Frederick L. Artiss. Also survived by a grandchild. Service will be held at Ft. Myer Chapel on Friday, November 16 at 9 a.m., with interment to follow at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Everyone attending service must meet at front gate of cemetery at 8:15 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Montgomery Hospice Society, 1450 Research Blvd., Suite 310, Rockville, MD 20850.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
