Keith Richard Barney was born at Springfield, Vermont, July 17, 1904.
He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, 1921, from the United States Military Academy in 1926, and received a CE degree from Cornell University, 1928-29. He was also a student at the Army Engineer School, 1931-32 and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, 1949-50.
He married Frances McClymonds, June 18, 1929.
He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers, in 1926 and advanced through the grades to Major General, 1956.
He was Professor, Military Science-Tactics, Michigan College of Mining and Technology, 1938-40. Commanding Officer, 1120th Engineer Group, European Theater of Operations in World War II.
His post-war career was as District engineer, Kansas City, Missouri, 1953-55; Director of Installations, Office Deputy Chief of Staff Logistics, Department of Army, 1955-58; Division Engineer, US Army Engineer Division, Missouri River, 1958-60; Deputy Chief of Army engineers, 1960-62. He retirered from active duty in in 1962.
The General’s medals include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Honor, Croix de Guerre with palms (France).
He was the author: History of Springfield, Vermont.
He made his home at Arlington, Virginia, where he died January 12, 1977.
He was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
