Ray W. Chamberlain, 65, a retired Army Colonel and Loudoun County, Virginia, political and community activist, died of cancer November 5, 2001, at the Hospice of Northern Virginia.
Colonel Chamberlain retired from the Army in 1996 after having served as deputy chief of staff for intelligence at Army headquarters. His military career included 33 years of reserve and active duty service.
In Loudoun County, he was chairman from 1996 until 2000 of the Commission on Aging, and in that capacity he developed and conducted a senior needs survey. He helped organize opposition to a proposed horse track in Ashburn, and he helped found Loudoun Citizens for Responsible Government and two slow-growth organizations, the Sustainable Loudoun Network and Voters to Stop Sprawl, in which he served as treasurer.
Colonel Chamberlain, a resident of Ashburn, was born in Minneapolis and graduated from the Minnesota Institute of Technology. His military career included service in the Army Security Agency and as an inspector general. He attended the Command and General Staff College. He received two awards of the Legion of Merit and a Meritorious Service Medal.
While in the reserve, Colonel Chamberlain worked as a civilian engineer for Honeywell and Univac. He settled in the Washington area in 1974.
His marriage to Dorothy Chamberlain ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Anna Chamberlain of Ashburn; five children from her previous marriage whom Colonel Chamberlain adopted, Diana Lieffring of Roseville, Minn., Teresa Nelson of Arden Hills, Minn., Julie Kearney of University Park, Monica Poff of Lenoir, N.C., and Christopher Mosio of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; a son from his first marriage, Mark Chamberlain of St. Paul, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. There will be a service at the Ft. Myer Chapel at 11 a.m., Friday, December 7, 2001, followed by burial at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Northern Virginia, 9300 Lee Hwy., Suite 500, Fairfax, VA 22031-1207.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
