Frank John Mattia – Private First Class, United States Army

From a contemporary press report:

Frank John Mattia, 80, a native Washingtonian who retired in 1980 after more than 40 years as manager of old Zoltrow’s Fish Market, formerly at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Newton Street in Northwest, died of a heart ailment June 18, 1999 at his home in Silver Spring, Maryland. He had diabetes.

Mr. Mattia began working at the seafood market before entering the Army during World War II.

He participated in the Allied forces’ invasion at Normandy and in combat in Europe.

After the war, he rejoined Zoltrow’s, and for a short time, operated his own grocery store in Washington.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Mattia of Silver Spring; a son, Larry Mattia of Adelphi; a brother, Michael Mattia of Gaithersburg; and a granddaughter.
