Charles Russell Miller Jr., 74, died July 26, 1999, at his home in Norfolk, Virginia.
A native of Alexandria, Virginia, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1946, and spent his Naval career in the submarine service.
He taught Naval ROTC at UCLA and later went on to earn an M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the same institution.
He became a college professor after his military service, and taught at universities in California, Arizona and at Old Dominion University. He was a chartered financial analyst. In 1970, he co-founded Investment & Financial Management Inc., serving as its president for 29 years. He was also a long-term member of the Kiwanis Club of Norfolk and Phi Beta Kappa.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth Arnic Miller; and five children; and 10 grandchildren, William Press Miller and his wife, Lamar Wolcott Miller, and their children, Mary Baylor and Press, Patricia M. Robinson and her husband, James M. Robinson, and their children, James and Meredith, Stephana M. Wier and her husband, William W. Wier and their daughter, Brooke, Michaela M. Dunstan and her husband, the Rev. Stephen N. Dunstan and their daughters, Brittany, Stephany and Rebekah, and Margaret M. Orsini and her husband, Dean G. Orsini, and their sons, Benjamin and David.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m.Thursday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel.
Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke St., Alexandria Virginia 22314.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
