Thomas Andrew McParlin (1825-1897) was a surgeon in the U. S. Army from the time of the Mexican War to after the Civil War.

His frequent letters to his family and wife in Annapolis described life as an Army Surgeon in the mid nineteenth century. By the end of the Civil War, McParlin had become Medical Director of the Army of the Potomac and was present during the siege at Petersburg.


January 29, 1897 – Brevet Brigadier General Thomas A. McParlin died in Annapolis yesterday.  He was in the regular service, from which he entered from Maryland, from 1849 until he was retired in July 1889.  He was Major and Surgeon at the outbreak of the rebellion, and was brevetted Lieuetnant Colonel and Colonel for faithful and meritorious service.  He won his Brigadier’s brevet in 1866 for meritorious and distinguished service in the epidemic of cholera and yellow fever in New Orleans that year.
