Born in Virginia on March 4, 1837 and graduated from West Point on July 1, 1857, He died on September 15, 1890 and was buried in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery. His stone there reads:
“Bore distinguished part in the Civil War as Chief Ordnance Officer of the Army of the Cumberland and the Military District of Mississippi on the staff of General Sherman.
“Erected by his friends as a tribute of their
affection and esteem.”

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
