Killed in action with William Cordero in Laos on June 22, 1965. During his tour he had earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters.
He is buried in Section 46 of Arlington National Cemetery, near the Memorial Amphitheater.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
