Helen Louise Fausset Helen Louise Fausset, 88, of Boise, Idaho, passed away August 18, 2008, at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise.
Helen will be interred next her husband on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
Helen was born on October 20, 1919, in Berwick, Illinois, the daughter of Michael Ryan and Mildred (Picton) Ryan. She graduated from Monmouth High School (Illinois) in 1937, and continued her education at nearby Monmouth College. While in college, she met Louis R. Fausset, whom she married on December 15, 1938, in Burlington, Iowa. To supplement the family income while in college, her husband joined the Illinois National Guard (later activated as the 809th Tank Destroyer Battalion). This decision led the couple to an interesting and exciting career in the military.
In 1942, the couple was transferred to Fort Hood, Texas. Helen attended nurse’s training in nearby Temple, Texas, and spent the World War II years as a certified nursing assistant and Red Cross volunteer. During the post-war occupation, she joined her husband in Germany, living in Bamberg, Bayreuth, and Schweinfurt. During this time she became an avid fisherwoman – for food, not for sport. While accompanying her husband during additional overseas assignments, she was afforded the opportunity to live in Kumamoto, Japan, and Athens, Greece.
The couple moved to Boise in 1964, and continued to live there upon retirement. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and husband. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Neal Fausset and Marilyn Brown Fausset of Boulder, Colorado, and three grandchildren, Steven Fausset, Yuri Brown, and Dina Brown. Helen suffered from progressive macular degeneration that severely impaired her vision. Although this condition did not contribute to her death, she desired that memorial contributions be made to the Idaho Commission for the Blind. The family gives special thanks to the nursing staff of floor 6 East at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center for the attentive and compassionate care Helen received in her final days.
