Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence “Larry” R. Maroon, 79, of Englewood, Florida, died September 5, 2000, at Hospice House in Venice, Florida.
He was born March 18, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Harvey and Helen Golensky Maroon. He came to Englewood 14 years ago from Fairview Park, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army for 39 years, seeing duty in World War II, Korean War and as a 37th division battalion commander in the National Guard in Lakewood, Ohio. He received the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and numerous service medals.
He worked for the Ohio Motor Association for 32 years and was president the last three years before retiring in 1986. He was an avid traveler and spent summers in England.
Survivors include his wife, Millicent “Sue” Maroon of Englewood; brother, Gilbert and his wife, Lois Maroon of St. Louis, Mo. He was predeceased by a sister, Pearl Dalton.
No services are scheduled. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238, would be appreciated.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
