Lewis Wayne Thorne – Major, United States Army

From a contemporary press report:

Lewis Wayne Thorne, 79, an Army major who retired in the mid-1960s and spent about a decade as sports director of the Military District of Washington, died of lung cancer March 15, 2000 at his home in Alexandria.

He was born in Fairmont, WestVirginia, and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from West Virginia University. After joined the Army during World War II, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the Korean War.

His honors included a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Ann Thorne of Alexandria; four children, Ron, of Centreville, William, of Alexandria, Dennis, of Harrisburg, Pa., and Myra M. Small of North Wales, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2000 at 1 p.m. at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel. Interment to follow with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
