David C. Lewis – Brigadier General, United States Army

Brigadier General David C. Lewis, United States Army, Retired, age 95, of Fairfax, Virginia, died Sunday, January 28, 2001. General Lewis was born in Sugar Notch, Pennsylvania and grew up in the Scranton-Sugar Notch area.

In 1929 he graduated from what is now West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He earned his Master’s Degree in Education at Temple University. He was commissioned in the Pennsylvania National Guard in 1935.

His military career included service in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He completed tours of duty in Puerto Rico, Turkey, Germany and the Pentagon.

After retiring from the Army in 1962, he joined the General Electric Company. He retired from General Electric in 1970.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marie Tapper Lewis; sons, David Lewis of Vienna, VA, and Stephen Lewis of Seattle, WA; daughters, Marianne Cole of Tampa, FL and Deborah Dempsey of Marshall, VA. Also survived by seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on February 9 at 10:45 a.m. at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory, may be made to the American Red Cross, National Capitol Chapter.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
