On Friday, December 12, 1997 in Hamption, Virginia, Retired U.S. Army Colonel, CARL DAVIS McFERREN, age 83.
Colonel McFerren graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1939, and was a veteran of the Pacific Theater with the Americal Division in World War II. He retired from the Army in 1969 after 30 years of service.
Colonel McFerren is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Homer McFerren; his sons, Retired. U.S. Army Colonel, Carl D. McFerren II and Colonel Jacob M. McFerren and six grandchildren.
Colonel McFerren will be buried at 10:30, December 17, 1997 in Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors. Persons wishing to attend should assemble in the Administration Building at 10 a.m.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
