Thomas R. Kelly Colonel, United States Marine Corps

Thomas R. Kelly, 73, a Marine Corps Colonel who retired as inspector at the base at Quantico, Virginia, died of cancer September 15, 2002 at his Fairfax County home.

He was an infantry officer for much of his 26-year military career, serving in Korea and Vietnam during the wars. He also served in Japan and Okinawa. He served in the office of the secretary of Defense as a military adviser, specializing in the Middle East. He was a consultant after he retired.

Colonel Kelly was born in Rochester, Minnesota, and raised in Napa, California. He was a graduate of the University of Southern California, where he also received a master’s degree in public administration.

His honors included the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Meritorious Service, Joint Service Commendation and Navy Commendation medals.

He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Fairfax.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Barbarene Kelly of Fairfax; three children, Karen Larsen of Napa; Marine Colonel Thomas Kelly Jr. of Oakton and Timothy Kelly of Reston; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

On Sunday, September 15, 2002 at his residence, THOMAS RAYMOND KELLY; beloved husband of Barbarene Kelly; son of Lucille A. Kelly; father of Karen Larsen, Tom, Jr. and Tim Kelly. Grandfather of five and great-grandfather of one.

Services will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 12:45 p.m. at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel. Interment Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Hospital National Medical Center, 111 Michigan Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20010 or the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, 4015 Wilson Blvd, 10th Flr., Arlington, Virginia 22203.
