Peter N. Derzis – Colonel, United States Army

From a contemporary press report:

Peter N. Derzis, 86, a retired Army colonel who later worked as a stockbroker, died of a heart attack December 24, 1997 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He lived in Arlington, Virginia.

Colonel Derzis was a native of Birmingham and a graduate of the University of Alabama. He served 32 years in the military and spent a majority of his career in Army Intelligence. He served as commandant of the U.S. Army Intelligence School at Fort Holabird in Baltimore for three years until his retirement in 1966. His military honors included the Legion of Merit.

He settled in the Washington area in the mid-1960s and worked about 20 years for several regional brokerage firms until his retirement in the late 1980s.

He was a Mason and Legionnaire and past officeholder of the Order of the Ahepa. He also was a Archon of the Greek Orthodox Church and a member of St. Katherines Greek Orthodox Church of Northern Virginia.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Helen Derzis of Arlington; two sons, Peter Jr., of Charlotte, and Nicholas C., of Birmingham; two sisters, Mary Lalos of Rockville and Christine Sepsas of Birmingham; and four grandchildren.

Brothers are asked to attend Prayer services at Arlington Funeral Home, 3901 N. Fairfax, Dr, Arlington, VA on Tuesday, January 6, 1998 at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services Wednesday, January 7 at 11 a.m. at Fort Myer Chapel.
