Fredrik W. Wiant, 61, a planner with the Army Corps of Engineers and a Boy Scout volunteer, died December 28, 2002, in a traffic accident near Nashua, Iowa. The Iowa Highway Patrol said his car crossed into a lane of oncoming traffic and collided with two other cars on Route 218.
Mr. Wiant, who lived in Reston, was born in Milwaukee and grew up in Iowa and Colorado. He served in the Army in Europe and later in the California Army National Guard. He graduated from the University of Denver, where he also received a master’s degree in history. He also had a master’s degree in history from Stanford University.
In 1981, he was recalled to military duty as a professor of military history at New Mexico Military Institute and in 1985 was assigned to the National Guard Bureau in Washington, where he remained until leaving military service as a major in 1990. Since his discharge, he had been a civilian planner with the Corps of Engineers.
His decorations included a Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
An Eagle Scout and holder of the Wood Badge, Mr. Wiant was a former scoutmaster of Troop 895 in Falls Church, which he revitalized with camping and exploration outings and public service.
He sang bass with the choir of Falls Church Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school and served as elder and chair of the church’s Mission and Social Action Committee.
His marriage to Fredel Amos ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife, Myrna, of Reston; three children from his first marriage, Fredrik Wiant II of Ashburn, Jon Fredrik Wiant of Boulder, Colo., and Laura Wiant of Pueblo, Colo.; four stepchildren, Berin, Meredith, Trevor and Loren McKeown, all of Reston; his stepmother, Jean Knight Wiant of Estherville, Iowa; two brothers, Jon Wiant of Falls Church and James Wiant of St. Cloud, Minn.; a sister, Sally Wiant of Lexington, Va.; a stepbrother; a stepsister; and a grandson.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
