Det Hubbeling, 79, a retired Navy Commander who was an aviator and intelligence officer, died September 18, 2003, at the Comfort Cottage assisted-living facility in Fairfax. He had Alzheimer’s disease.

Commander Hubbeling served 25 years in the Navy, beginning in 1944 when he flew Marine F4F Wildcat planes in air-to-ground support missions in the Pacific.

During the war in Korea, he served there as a squadron leader.

While in the service, he graduated from the University of Maryland with a political science degree. He studied Italian at the Army Language School and Farsi at the Defense Intelligence School in Washington.

He served as the senior assistant Navy attache to Italy from 1966 to 1968 and headed the Defense Intelligence School until his retirement from active military duty in 1968.

His military decorations included two distinguished Flying Crosses and six Air Medals.

Commander Hubbeling, who lived in McLean, was born in Ede, Holland, and also was raised in Italy and Belgium. At age 9, he and his sister, Lilly, immigrated to this country.

They settled in Enka, North Carolina, with their father, a chemical engineer.

Commander Hubbeling worked for Bendix Corp. as a sales executive in its aviation division from 1968 to the early 1980s.

He also ran his own business, Phast Corporation, which specialized in high-speed mail processing equipment.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Doris Hubbeling of McLean; three children, Donna Rogers of Ocala, Florida, Deborah Miller of Falls Church and Jeffrey Hubbeling of New York; and four grandchildren.

On Thursday, September 18, 2003 of McLean, Virginia. Husband of Doris B. Hubbeling; father of Donna Rogers and her husband, David, Deborah Miller and her husband, Paul, Jeffrey Detmer Hubbeling and his wife, Jana; brother of Stewart Hubbeling; grandfather of Diana, Jonathan, Michael and Elizabeth.

Funeral services will be held at The Falls Church, 115 E. Fairfax St., Falls Church, Virginia 22046, on Monday, September 22 at 10 a.m. Friends are asked to assemble at the administration building at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, October 29 at 8:30 a.m., followed by graveside services with Full Military Honors at 9 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ School, Arden, North Carolina 28704.
