Major Geaorge Baden Waring was killed in action in Vietnam on August 26, 1972 while directing airstrikes from his O-1 spotter plane.
Dad flew jets early in his Air Force career, later flying the B-52 (Vietnam in 1968), and then becoming an instructor pilot for the B-52.
He was decorated for heroism in combat in 1972 and in 1974 had the training facilities for B-52 and KC-135 pilots named in his honor. It was called the Waring Academic Center and the building and its training facilities were in opeartion until 1994 or thereabouts when the base, Castle Air Force Base, California, was closed. The building held his portrait and a plaque with his name until its closing
Dad received the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star for heroism in combat.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
