Temple S. Ryland, 53, of 6608 Rolling Rd., an engineer with the Department of Public Works in Richmond, and a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, died Wednesday (January 1964) in Washington.
Colonel Ryland has worked for the City of Richmond for six years. He was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute.
He had served with the army for 23 years before his retirement, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, in 1957. He served in the Philippines during World War II, spending the latter part of the war as a prisoner.
He later returned with the American occupation forces because of his knowledge of the Japanese language.
Colonel Ryland was a member of the Gallilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach, a member of the VMI Club of Richmond and secretary of the Retired Officers Association of Richmond.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carolyn Gresham Ryland, and a daughter, Mrs. Temple Ryland Farnsworth of Matthews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
