Colonel Maurice E. Jessup

Colonel Maurice E. ”Red” Jessup, 79, retired U.S. Army veteran of 36 years service to his country, died on Thursday, June 24, 1999, at his home in Bloomington, Indiana.

Born on March 1, 1920, in South Bend, Indiana, he married Irene Weber on July 3, 1942. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh he began a distinguished military career that spanned three decades and included service in the European Theater during World War II and in the Korean Conflict. During his career he rose from the rank of private to full colonel.

He served as the secretary to the United Nations Command in Korea. In this role he was instrumental in maintaining stability between North and South Korea.

In 1974 he was presented the nation’s highest peacetime award, The Distinguished Service Medal, for his duty performance as the defense military attache in Nicosia, Cyprus.

He retired at Fort Benjamin Harrison in May 1978 as the senior Army advisor to the Indiana Army National Guard.

Following retirement, Maurice moved to Bloomington where he remained active in the Bloomington Ballroom Dance Club, Senior Indiana Golf Tour, the YMCA and the Bloomington Country Club. For the past three years he had served as treasurer at the East Monroe Water Company.

Maurice is survived by his wife, Irene; four children, Maurice Bean of Racine, Wis., Greg Jessup and Kathleen Maurer, both of Greenwood, Ind., and Christine Newland of Geneva, Ill. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Other survivors include two brothers, Eugene Jessup of Neenah, Wisconsin, and Vern Jessup of Granger, Ind.iana.

There will be no services locally. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

Survivors include his wife, Irene (Weber); three daughters, Maurene Bean of Racine, Wis., Christene Newland of Geneva, Ill., and Kathlene Maurer of Greenwood, Ind.; a son, Gregory of Greenwood; a foster son, Robert Shaner of Charlotte, N.C.; and two brothers, Vern of Granger and Eugene of Neenah, Wis. Services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation.
