Lieutenant Commander William Brinker Stanard, USN, Retired, 79, of 255 College Cross, died November 29, 1999, in Norfolk, Virginia.
Commander Stanard was a native of Huntington, West Virginia and a resident of Norfolk since 1970. He graduated from the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, class of 1944 and served on the USS Massachuttes during World War II. His Military service included piloting blimps and later patrol aircraft and sea planes. He retired from the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander after 20 years service to his country.
He subsequently worked for the United States Civil Service Navy Department and retired as a Project Manager. LCDR Stanard was a self employed real estate broker and a lifetime avid photographer.
Commander Stanard was a member of the Retired Officers Association, National Aviation Association, Surburban Kiwanis club, Norfolk YMCA.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Sarah Frances Terrell Stanard of Norfolk; daughter, Beverly S. Johnson and her husband David of Charles City County, VA; son, Richard Earl Stanard of Raleigh; sister, Mary Ann Brittenham of New York City, NY; grandchildren, David R. Johnson, Jr. and his wife Lori, Kimberlyn Stevenson and her husband Andrew, Amy Frances Stannard and Marc W. Stannard and one great-granddaughter, Charlotte Elizabeth Johnson.
A chapel service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 3, 1999, at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Chapel. Burial with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
