Edward Bernard Ives was the son of Joseph Christmas and Cora Semmes Ives. He entered Georgetown College September 16, 1868. He withdrew in 1874and shortly thereafter enrolled at West Point Academy, graduating in 1878.He died in Washington D.C., December 31, 1903, and is buried in Arlington Cemetery, Virginia, Section 3, Grave 1455, next to his brother, Francis Joseph Ives.
His brother, Francis Joseph Ives, Major, United States Army, is also buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
