PALM DESERT, California – William E. Bernstein, 75, formerly of South Hadley Massachusetts, died October 26 at Eisenhower Hospital in Rancho Mirage, California.
He worked for TRW-Holyoke Wire and Cable in the 1970s before moving to the TRW Electronics Division in Los Angeles as director of Human Resources in the 1980s. He retired in 1990. He had lived in South Hadley and was active in community affairs.
Born in Clifton Forge, Virginia, he was a graduate of the University of Alabama. He served in the ir Force, during the Korean and Viet Nam wars and retired with the rank of Major. He served three tours of duty at Westover Air Base.
He previously served in the Navy during World War II as a pharmacist mate with the Marines in the Pacific Theater.
He was president of the Desert Falls Master and Villas Homeowners Association for the past nine years, president of the Palm Desert “Palms to Pines” Rotary Club and assistant governor of Rotary District 5330, and a docent at the Living Desert Reserve.
He leaves his wife, the former Dorothy Spier; a son Bill Jr., of Lake Waccamaw, N.C.; two daughters, Jane Jarzabek of Westfield, Mass., and Leslie Bramwell-Smith of Petulama, Calif.; and three grandchildren. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in November. Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
