LIEUTENANT COMMANDER JONES, ONCE AIDE TO WILSON
WASHINGTON, August 31, 1947 – Lieutenant Commander Needham Lee Jones, USN, retired, a Naval Aide to the late President Woodrow Wilson, died today in the Naval Hospital at Bethesda, Maryland. His age was 71.
Commander Jones was graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1897 and saw service in the Spanish-American War. He became Naval Aide to Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy in 1913 and later served President Wilson in that same capacity. He was retired for physical disability in 1917 and had lived in Washington since then.
He was a vestryman and junior warden of St. Thomas Protestant Episcopal Church and a member of the Army and Navy Club.
He married in 1901 to Miss Minna Cromwell, daughter of Rear Admiral and Mrs. Bartlett J. Cromwell. Mrs. Jones died in 1940.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. William Ross Clark of Mansfield, Connecticut, and Mrs. Arthur Hobson Quinn, Jr., of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and four grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday in St. Thomas Church. Burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
