Norman William Hammes – Colonel, United States Army

Retired Colonel Norman William Hammes, 78, of 19 Westwind Court, husband of Shirley Hammes, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at his home in Seneca, South Carolina.

Born in Anoka, Minnesota, Mr. Hammes was a son of the late Henry B. and Jessie Schultz Hammes. Mr. Hammes was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

Hammes was a retired Colonel from the U.S. Army, serving throughout the world in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. His decorations and medals include the Legion of Merit with two clusters, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, and numerous others.

Surviving are his wife of the home; two daughters, Anne Lynn Kelley of Rochester Mills, Michigan, and Julie Aleene Hammes of Seneca; two sons, Patrick Hammes of Brownsville, Texas, and Larry Hammes of Augusta, Maine; one sister, Mary Maranda of Shoreview, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews that he loved.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at St. Andrews Catholic Church Chapel in Clemson. Burial will take place 9 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2002, in Arlington National Cemetery with full Military Honors.
