William Ellbridge Chickering – Brigadier General, United States Army

William Elbridge Chickering (1895-1959)

Born in Smithville, New Jersey on January 8, 1895.

Commissioned in the Infantry in 1917. Served with the 7th Infantry, American Expeditionary Force at Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St, Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne 1917-1918. Wounded and taken prisoner on October 3, 1918.

Aide-de-camp to Brigadier General Fred W. Sladen in 1921. Transferred to the Adjutant Generals Department in 1927.  Assistant Adjutant General in the Philippine Department July 1933-May 1936. Graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1937. Duty in the Adjutant Generals office 1938-1940.

Deputy Administrator of Export Control in the War Department 1940-1941, then with the Army Group in the War Department 1941-1942. Adjutant General, then Chief of Staff at Headquarters of Services of Supply, U.S. Army Forces in the Middle East July 1942-November 1943. Director of the Army Postal Service 1943-1946. Brigadier General in January 1944. Retired in February 1946. Decorations included the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit and the Purple Heart.

Died on March 2, 1959
