William Eugene Doyle, 69, an officer with the CIA’s Directorate of Operations from the late 1950s to 1993, died November 27, 2002, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Virginia. He had liver failure and dementia.
Mr. Doyle, a Vienna resident, spent most of his CIA career in Asia and settled in the Washington area in 1982.
After retiring, he was a volunteer teaching aide in the Fairfax County public schools English-as-a-second-language program.
He was a native of Vienna, Missouri, and was a 1955 history graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. He worked in Army intelligence in the mid-1950s and retired from the Army Reserve as a Colonel in the mid-1980s.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Diane Smith Doyle of Vienna; two daughters, Deborah H. Webster of Mountain View, Calif., and Christine A. Mayman of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; his mother, Sylvia A. Doyle of Jefferson City, Mo.; a sister; three brothers; and two grandchildren.

N.E., Vienna, VA, on Friday, December 6, at 11 a.m. Interment Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, December 9, at 9 a.m.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
