Orrin Eugene Hine was born at Lisle, New York on 28 June 1836. During the Civil War he served as Captain, 50th New York Engineers. At the conclusion of the war he was brevetted Major for his services in the war. He married Alma Delano on 18 June 1866 at Maine, Broome County, New York. At some point they relocated to Vienna, Virginia.
Their son, Charles Delano Hine, Colonel, United States Army, is buried near them in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
