Second Lieutenant Goss was the Platoon Leader of the 3rd Platoon, Company H, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. He had joined the Company Headquarters at Hagaru-ri, North Korea awaiting transfer, when it came under attack by the Chinese. He was Killed in Action during the attack on November 29, 1950.
Second Lieutenant Goss was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Service Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
SIDE NOTE: I HAVE INFORMATION FROM MICRO-FILM RECORDS FROM THE AWARDS SECTION QUANTICO THAT SAYS, “HAS PREVIOUSLY BEEN RECOMMENDED FOR THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL. (TAKEN FROM FITNESS REPORT).” I DON’T KNOW IF IT WAS EVER ISSUED TO HIM OR HIS NEXT OF KIN WHO I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE. HE AND I WERE IN THE FIELD HOSPITAL SEPTEMBER 1950. QUITE A CHARACTER.
