Labor leader’s descendent, Florence MacKay, dies

Florence Gompers MacKay, 102, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday in a local nursing home. She was the granddaughter of labor leader Samuel Gompers, founder and first president of the American Federation of Labor.
The funeral and burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery and will be private, according to Stuhr’s Mount
Pleasant Chapel.
Mrs. MacKay was born in Washington, D.C., a daughter of Samuel Gompers Jr. and Sophia Dampf Gompers.
She served as a field officer with the American Red Cross in France during World War I. She was a life member and national officer of the Women’s Overseas Service League. She was a Protestant and the widow of Dr. William H. MacKay.
Surviving are a daughter, Shirley M. Crockett of Mount Pleasant; a son, Dr. James C. MacKay of Wilmington, N.C.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
