Colonel Hartigan died at his home in Chesapeake, Virginia, on May 13, 1997, after a prolonged illness.
Colonel Hartigan served in the 1st Infantry and 101st Airborne Divisions, on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Serving with distinction, Colonel Hartigan is a member of the Army Hall of Fame and numbered among his recognitions, the Silver and Bronze Stars, the Cross of Gallantry (the Republic of Vietnam) and the German Cross.
He retired in 1979 and was later employed by VSE Corporation. He is survived by his wife, Eileen; his children, Amy Talton, Mary Katherine Simone and David Hartigan, II; his step-children, Sharon Young, Erin Wicks, Katherine and Donald Breslin; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; his mother, Marjorie Hartigan; and his siblings, Dr. John Hartigan, William Hartigan and Virginia Brandt. Viewing and mass at St. Matthews Church, Chesapeake, VA at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21 with interment at Arlington National Cemetery at 10:45 a.m. on May 22. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to either the American Heart Association or to ”Boys Town”, Boys Town, NE 68010.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
