ARMY HONORS DEAD YOUTH
SPECIAL GUARD ESCORTS BODY OF BOY WHO SERVED A WEEK
HAMMONTON, New Jersey – January 29, 1946 – Ten days ago William Joseph McIlvaine, 17-year-old son of Dr. and Mrs. William E. McIlvaine of this community, enlisted in the Army Air Forces. Last night an honor guard from Fort Hancock, New Jersey, brought his body home. He died last Saturday at the station hospital of double pneumonia.
An honor graduate of Hammonton High School, the young soldier, in joining the Army was following in the footsteps of his father, who served as a Medical Officer in both World Wars. Dr. McIlvaine recently was discharged from the service with the rank of Major.
Tomorrow evening an honor guard from the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will stand watch over the coffin. A solemn high mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church on Thursday morning, with burial at the National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, on Friday.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
