“BOLLING AIR FORCE BASE, D.C. (AFNS) — Ruth Apperson Eaker, wife of the late General Ira C. Eaker, died December 13, 1996 at Malcoln Grow Medical Center, Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, after a lengthy illness.
In a December 18 ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery attended by her family, friends and members of the Tuskegee Airmen Association, she was remembered as a “role model for all and for all occasions.”
Born in 1908, she married then-Army Air Corps pilot Captain Eaker in 1930, after he had just achieved international fame for his Pan-American flights. During World War II, while Eaker was busy as commander of 8th Air Force and later as commander in chief of the Allied Air Forces in the Mediterranean area, Mrs. Eaker remained in Washington, D.C., supporting the war efforts through bond rallies and coordinating ceremonial trips to war production plants.
After the Eakers retired from military life, she remained active as an adviser to the agency that eventually developed into today’s family support centers; serving as a charter member of the board of The Air Force Retired Officers’ Community; and with the Falcon’s Landing retirement development in Loudon, Virginia.”
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
