Henry D. Chiu – Colonel, United States Air Force

Henry D. Chiu, 80, an Alexandria resident who retired as an Air Force colonel after devoting much of his career to intelligence work, died April 17, 1999 at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Virginia. He had a respiratory ailment.

Colonel Chiu graduated from college in his native China and served with the Chinese military during World War II. He came to this country after the war and worked for the Army Map Service in Washington before receiving his Air Force commission in the early 1950s.

He served in Europe and the Far East before retiring from active duty in 1977. After that, he did consulting work with countries seeking to do business in China.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia D., of Alexandria; two sons, Bruce, of Orlando, and Fredrick, of Alexandria; a daughter, Eileen Graham of New York; and four grandchildren.

On Saturday, April 17, 1999, Col. HENRY D. CHIU, beloved husband of Virginia D. Chiu; father of Eileen Graham, Frederick and Bruce Chiu; grandfather of Virginia and James Graham and Michael and Christopher Chiu. Funeral services at Ft. Myer Chapel on Friday, April 30, at 3 p.m. Interment Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests contributions be made to the Special Olympics, Area 26, P.O. Box 3084, Fairfax, VA.

Michael Robert Patterson

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
