Former Chief of Staff of 61st Cavalry Division if Dead

NEW YORK, New York – July 27, 1938 – Colonel William Murray Connell, U.S.A., retired, died on Monday at his home, 29 East Ninth Street, after a long illness.  Formerly Chief of Staff of the Sixty-First Cavalry Division, United States Army Reserve, with headquarters here, Colonel Connell had retired in 1935.  His age was 66.

Born here, Colonel Connell served as a First Lieutenant in the Twelfth New York Regiment in the Spanish-American War and later, in 1898, was promoted to Captain.  The regiment went to Cuba after the cessation of hostilities.

Later he was a First Lieutenant in the Twenty-Sixth United States Infantry and after that be became a Captain in the Regular Army.  In 1917-18 he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the National Army.  He did not go overseas and became a Colonel in the Regular Army in 1925.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Harriet Woodward Connell, and three sisters.  A funeral service will be held at 4:30 P.M. today at his home.  Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
