RANDALL, H. GORDON, Col., USA (Ret.)
Passed away on May 12, 2003 at the age of 88. He worked for the Association of American Railroads from 1937 to 1941 until being called to active duty in the U.S. Army. He entered the Army as a First Lieutenant. In 1947, he was promoted to Colonel of the Transportation Corps and later served as a Colonel in the Army Reserve.
Returning to civilian life in September 1947, he returned to the Association of American Railroads and in 1971 he was promoted to Vice Chairman. He held that position until he retired in 1983.
Upon retiring, he began his career in volunteer work starting in 1986 with the McLean Community Center and in 1989 he became Coordinator of Volunteers. He was also elected to the governing board of the McLean Community Center for a three-year term in 1997. He began ushering in 1988 at Alden Theatre.
In 1990, he joined the American Legion and he earned the Legionnaire of the Year Award in 1995. He also served as American Legion Commander in 1997 and 1998. The Rotary Club awarded him the Senior Achievement Award in 1995 and that same year, he was awarded Fairfax County’s Senior Citizen. In 2001, He received the Friends Indeed Award from the Friends of McLean.
He was married for 57 years to Rae M. Randall, who passed away in 1996. Their son, H. Gordon Randall, Jr., passed away in 1992. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Marion Jane Jack; nephews, Donald and Douglas Jack; stepmother, Virginia Randall; and stepsisters, Trudy Shull and Mary Cooney.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8 in the Old Post Chapel at Fort Myer, with burial in Arlington National Cemetery. A reception will follow at the McLean American Legion Post 270.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
